76-year-old chooses a charity run for birthday celebration
To celebrate her 76th birthday, Sue Webber decided to lace up her trainers for a charity run.
Some people may choose a nice meal out or a trip to the theatre for their birthday.
But Sue Webber planned something more adventurous to celebrate her 76th this weekend – a 5km run.
The Thetford resident laced up her trainers for the run along the town’s water meadows and riverside path on Saturday, in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Ms Webber has been fund-raising for around 10 years but said their was her first “physical challenge”.
“Last October I started jogging for the good of my health and one thing led to another,” she said.
“To be honest, I was inspired by the people who do the Thetford ParkRun and thought I could aim to do that.
“I’m not really built for jogging, but I like being out in the fresh air.”
As she was helping at a bazaar at Thetford Methodist Church on Saturday morning, when the ParkRun was taking place, Ms Webber completed her own run in the afternoon, starting from her home in Monksgate and using a variation on the ParkRun route.
She has had sponsorship from Thetford Grammar School and the methodist church, as well as online donations.
She said she tries to raise around £3,000 for Cancer Research UK each year, with this challenge marking the first “big push”.
“We have had so many heartaches among family and friends throughout our lives due to cancer,” she said.
“They say in 20 years they will have cured it, and I hope to live to see it and know that I have done my little bit.”
