WORK to fix a broken manhole cover on the A47 Acle straight, which caused huge delays this morning, has finished - but temporary traffic lights will remain in place until tomorrow (Tuesday).

Motorists were delayed by up to 40 minutes after traffic was reduced to one lane as engineers carried out emergency repairs to the collapsed cover on the eastbound carriageway, a few yards from the entrance to the Vauxhall holiday park.

Drivers also faced queues in and out of Great Yarmouth this evening but BT - which has carried out the repairs - said the work had now been completed, but the lights will stay to allow the concrete to set.

A spokesman apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Cones were put up around the collapsed cover on Saturday, causing delays over the weekend.

  • I'm sure you would rather have a slow journey than a journey where you vehical would of been damaged by driving into the hole left by the collapsed cover. The only thing i disagree with in the report is the wording 'allow the concrete to set' the material used should of been M45 rapid set mortar or equivalent and sets solid enough to allow traffic back over it in less than the specified 45 minutes.

  • spot on greenmanwalking, I have used rapid dry cement for personal projects, and it is very effective when time is crucial, surely the high strength, rapid dry stuff should have been used on this extremely busy road.

  • Yes I went that way back and forth 4 times over the few days it took and sat in endless queues during the 'emergency repairs' - I did see a man working on my 4th drive past on Tuesday. So glad that's fixed!

  • Emergency 'work'. Work meaning no work - a bloke sitting in his vehicle, with cones around it and temporary traffic lights slowing traffic down for miles. Took me an hour to get from Acle to Great Yarmouth, at under 10mph most of the way.
