A new 24/7 slot machine casino site is to open in a Norfolk town despite a competitor's attempts to block it.

Luxury Leisure, which trades as Admiral, has had its bid to open a site in Great Yarmouth's high street approved by Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

Despite the coastal town being known for its seafront slot machines, this will be only the second company to open a venue in the high street area - which will replace the former CEX store in King Street.

The move led to competitor Merku Slots, located in Regent Road just 65m away, to push back against the plans.

Through an agent, it issued a letter of objection to the council, in which the company claimed the plans breached a number of planning policies.

But officers at the council determined that while the loss of a shop was a negative, the change of use to an adult gaming centre would bring "vitality and viability" to the town centre and the 24/7 opening hours were thought to potentially improve surveillance and safety in the area.
