Police were on the scene in the Heartsease area while they tried to track down the suspect on Friday morning.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing six police cars in the area at 6am and that officers were "shouting at people to stay inside or get back".

Labour councillor for Heartsease Crome Ward Adam Giles said: " I have contacted the police regarding the worrying news of the stabbing on Skelton Road last night.

"I have asked for us as ward councillors to be briefed and for the police to provide us with their assessment, if any, of the risk level to the wider public from this troubling incident.

"I understand the anxiety many Heartsease residents will be feeling right now after this shocking news from what is normally a quiet, peaceful community."

A police spokeswoman has been contacted for comment.
