Plans to build more than 450 homes on the outskirts of Norwich which were being opposed by a nearby hotel have been withdrawn.

Developers had hoped to build another 456 homes on the White House Farm development in Sprowston, where around 1,200 were built during phase one, but have now told Broadland District Council they are pulling the plug.

Part of phase two would border Sprowston Manor but management of the hotel and golf club had objected saying the new homes would limit the use of its marquee for weddings and events, which it said could lead to its closure and a large number of redundancies.

In a letter to the council, the managing director of Britannia Hotels, Alexander Langsam, had said: "I have to stress how important the marquee is to sustaining the hotel and golf club business."

Land at White House Farm was adopted as part of the Norwich Growth Triangle in 2016 as part of government orders to deliver 7,000 new homes by 2026.

Phase two plans included space for shops at the Salhouse Road end as well as a play area and multi-use games area off Atlantic Avenue.

Conservative district councillor for Sprowston East, John Ward, said he was disappointed to hear the plans had been pulled as the council had been hoping to use them to fund a pedestrian crossing nearby.

Mr Ward said: "It's a great shame.

"We were hoping it would unlock funding for a much-needed crossing in Atlantic Way."

The application was withdrawn by Persimmon last month on behalf of the company as well as Hopkins Homes and Taylor Wimpey who are also working on the development.

It is not yet known why the developers withdrew the plans or if new plans will come forward, with a third phase having previously been mooted as a westward continuation of the phase two land
