Several boats have been on fire at a cruising club in Norfolk.

Emergency services responded to a 999 call at 1.43pm this afternoon (March 15) at the Denver Cruising Club on the River Great Ouse, in Southery.

The A10 in Southery was closed both ways for around a mile either side of the fire.

Seven fire crews were battling the blaze with hose reels and jets.

Police were on the scene supporting fire crews as they deal with the matter.

King's Lynn police asked drivers to avoid the area.

Traffic was building in the surrounding villages as drivers find alternative routes.

Ten Mile Bank, a small winding road on the other side of the river, was also blocked by traffic.

Fire crews and the Environmental Protection Unit have placed a boom in the river at Modney Bridge, around two miles from the fire.

This will stop fuel from the boats spilling downstream and will help to ease the effect of the incident on wildlife, such as waterfowl, in the surrounding area.

The boats are moored side-by-side, which was dangerous as the fire could have spread easier.

There is caution amid the blaze as the boats contain gas tanks and batteries on board.

There are around 20 boats seen to be moored, but it is currently unclear how many have been affected by the fire.

Founded in 1971, the Denver Cruising Club is associated with the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).

Sat on the Great Ouse, halfway between Ely and Denver Sluice, there are moorings for up to 45 boats.
