We've had Black Friday. We've had Cyber Monday. So why not make today Shop Local Tuesday, followed by Shop Local Wednesday and, since we're in the groove, make a day of it on Shop Local Thursday, Friday...?

Well, you get the idea. Once you've got the habit, every day is Shop Local Day and with one of the country's top shopping destinations right here in the heart of the county, it's an easy habit to acquire.

Christmas is as good a time as any to start. The Christmas lights have transformed the city centre into an enchanting spectacle, making it a real pleasure to go stroll from the network of little lanes that burrow into the heart of the city to the bright awnings of the historic marketplace – and beyond.

There's every kind of local shopping in Norwich. Our two shopping malls offer everything from one-of-a-kind local businesses to high-street names and designer boutiques; the main thoroughfares of Gentleman's Walk and London Street are richly atmospheric streets lined with shops, cafes and restaurants and the grandeur of Royal Arcade, gorgeously garlanded for the festive season, is also a treat at any time of the year.

The recent changes to traffic flows around the city have made popping in and out of the shops of St Stephen's Street easier than ever.

For a small city, Norwich packs a lot in. Take a turning off any of the main streets and you can find yourself browsing the independent shops of St Giles, St Benedicts and Magdalen Street, each linked by picture-perfect lanes and alleyways.

Despite the fact that Norwich regularly appears in the top 10 shopping destinations in the UK, it still has its local community at heart. Family businesses that have traded here for generations continue to do so – from department store to family butcher and baker, and from florist to grocer.

It's also a great place to stop for lunch or spend an evening in one of the city's wine bars, pubs or restaurants. The city also has more than its fair share of independent bistros and restaurants tucked away down the lanes. As the season of goodwill works its charm, a warm welcome awaits. And the coffee's not bad either.

As the windows on the advent calendar count down to Christmas, leave the laptop at home, grab the Shop Local app if you haven't already, and make a day of it in the city centre.
