A man was airlifted to hospital after his red Volkswagon Polo was involved in a crash with a tractor.
Police blocked the A1066 Low Road in Bressingham, near The Chequers Inn and Bressingham Steam and Gardens, following a call at 2.30pm yesterday.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service sent three crews from Diss, East Harling and Thetford to help release the man, who was later airlifted to hospital by the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
Samantha Compton, from Diss, said: 'I was probably about five cars behind the actual accident. Obviously we got out of the car to see what was happening. The front of the red car was literally obliterated.
'He was in quite a serious way. I've seen a few accidents in my time so I knew a bit about what to do. We were keeping him still in case of neck injuries and a gentleman was working on removing the battery of the car because it was smoking. One woman got in the car with him to talk to him and keep him awake.
'He was very confused and scared but he was sitting up when I left. The driver of the tractor seemed completely fine.'
Michael Knox-Johnston, landlord and owner at The Chequers Inn, said: 'I came out and saw the car on the road before all the police arrived. Four or five people were on the scene and had already called the emergency services.
'Apparently the chap was talking but the whole front of the car was caved in. After they freed him I saw them carry him past before they took him off in the air ambulance and it looked in a bad way.
'I've never seen so many emergency vehicles but they did a fantastic job. This is isn't the first accident here though and unfortunately it probably won't be the last.
'We have campaigned to get the speed limit reduced here, 50mph is just too much.'
Police said the road was reopened shortly before 5pm.
