The flood warning issued yesterday for Halesworth has this morning been removed.

Volunteers were out in force last night filling sandbags to put outside homes and businesses in the low-lying areas of Halesworth after concerns that more rain overnight could lead to further flooding.

The underpass at Saxons Way on the A144 was flooded yesterday, but by 5pm the river level had gone down.

Annette Dunnning, chairman of Halesworth town council, said it did not look as though there was any further flooding overnight.

She said: 'We took preventative measures to allay fears of some homes in low-lying areas. Power cuts in a small area added to their worries.

'They were very grateful to see people out helping them, just in case, late last night.

'There was a fantastic turnout from every section of our community. Some young people filled bags and transported them around the town to distribute and I never got their names!

'They were so swift to help and spread the word among their friends on Twitter and Facebook.'
