The Market Place roundabout in Dereham has been reopened by National Grid, during the current gas mains upgrade project, to help keep traffic flowing through the town.

After talking to residents and local businesses and carrying out another site investigation the company adjusted its plans so that the War Memorial roundabout has been able to reopen for two weeks enabling vehicles to travel from Swaffham Road to Wellington Road and vice versa. Market Place will remain closed southbound from the roundabout for through traffic, with access only to the car park and to businesses.

The roundabout will need to be closed for one further week, expected to be from March 10, to enable engineers to replace a pipe running underneath it.

Vince Doggett, National Grid authorising engineer, said: “We always aim to minimise any disruption caused by our work and support local communities. We believe that we can adjust our programme so that we can keep the roundabout open for the next two weeks without compromising safety or delaying the work.”

He added: “We would like to stress that Dereham is very much open for business, with access for motorists to all the car parks.”

Work began on the six-week project on Monday, February 17 to upgrade local gas mains, replacing the existing metal gas pipes, which have been in use for many years, with modern hardwearing plastic pipes that are designed to last for at least 80 years.

* During the first phase of work - approximately four weeks - Market Place is closed southbound between Wellington Road and Church Street. A diversionary route for through traffic will be provided via High Street, London Road, Station Road, and Matsell Way.

* For the final two weeks of the project, starting after completion of Phase 1, Market Place will be closed between Swaffham Road and Wellington Road by the war memorial. There will be no access from Swaffham Road to Market Place. A diversionary route will be provided via Swaffham Road, Drayton Lane, the A47, Tavern Lane and Yaxham Road.
