Motorists visiting a north Suffolk town centre could have to adhere to new 20mph speed limits from the early autumn.

The Eye speedwatch campaign group was successful in its bid to get the limits reduced in streets around Eye town centre, including Castleton Way and Victoria Hill.

Suffolk County Council approved the bid by the group, which had initiated a “20’s plenty” campaign.

The approval means the 20mph signs will be installed on five roads around the town centre, including the roads to Occold and Hoxne.

The bid was made because of concerns over the speed of vehicles travelling through the town.

In March, Robin Knight, co-ordinator of the speedwatch scheme, said: “Speed is a problem. Unfortunately, there are people who are going through Eye who are in a hurry to get where they are going and they don’t give any consideration for shoppers and cyclists.”

A survey was carried out which revealed over 55pc of motorists were driving at over 36mph in a 30mph zone, while figures showed that in the last five years police had recorded 33 accidents in the town.

The speedwatch group also collected a 925 signature petition calling for the limits to be reduced.

Signs will be bought from the county council and placed in the roads around the town.

Eye mayor Linda Cummins said: “We are hoping to discourage people from speeding because it is disturbing, unpleasant and dangerous for people walking in the town.”

The county council’s roads and transport policy development panel launched an investigation of 20mph speed limits and zones to develop criteria for similar schemes in Suffolk.
