Showgoers faced heavy traffic as they made their way to the annual Royal Norfolk Show today, but organisers are reassuring tomorrow's visitors that the congestion problem will be eased.

Julian Taylor, the new Norfolk Show director, advised people to 'be early birds and come very early on, or wait until later in the morning'.

Marcus Hammond from SEP Events, the events car park company, acknowledged the heavy traffic at the Sainsbury's roundabout off the A47, and urged drivers to take the Easton roundabout exit instead.

Temporary traffic lights on the Longwater roundabout on the A47 slip road were also installed to improve the flow of vehicles.

And in other areas on the A47 heavy traffic dominated both lanes on the westbound A47 past the Thickthorn junction, with queues of more than 50 minutes.

And early morning there were large queues on Norwich's Dereham Road towards the showground,

A colour-coded traffic plan has been drawn up with five new traffic routes, red, brown, purple, blue and yellow, to help ease congestion on the surrounding country roads.

Mr Taylor, who has already started planning next year's show, said: 'We had to do something about the traffic because of the had problems we had in the past.

'The problem today has been due to the flow onto the car park, and this has then gone back on to the roads.

'SEP are looking at this.'

Public transport for Thursday's show will remain the same as Wednesday's.

First will be running bus service 100 directly to and from the showground tomorrow. At peak periods buses will depart every 10 minutes from Norwich Rail Station via St Stephens Street, dropping visitors at the showground gate.

Combined bus and show admission tickets can be bought on the bus.

Konectbus will run an hourly service to the show from Dereham and from Attleborough and Wymondham, via Norwich Bus Station. For times and prices visit www.konectbus.co.uk

There is no shuttle bus service between Costessey Park and Ride and the showground this year.

And a number of surrounding roads will be restricted to one-way traffic on show days. These are:

Dereham Road, Easton (one-way westbound), Marlingford Road, Easton (one-way westbound from the exit of the Yellow car park), Bawburgh Road, Easton (one way from the Easton College entrance south to Marlingford Road) and Long Lane, Bawburgh (one-way southwards from the entrance to the Blue and Green car parks onto Hart's Lane junction).

Weather-wise, Chris Bell from Weatherquest said tomorrow there will be a chance of showers and a 30-40 per cent of thunder.

But temperatures could reach as high as 26 degrees, with bright skies.
