A town centre bridge has reopened after a technical fault meant it was closed to all traffic.

Highways England, which runs Britain’s A-roads, Tweeted at 7.19pm on Friday (July 27) that it had shut Lowestoft’s Bascule Bridge - which is part of the A47 - because of a “technical issue” which meant traffic was not able to pass in either direction.

The bridge is the main route into the coastal town, meaning drivers would have to drive to Oulton Broad to access the A12 towards Ipswich or A146 towards Beccles.

However once engineers arrived at the site, the bridge was reopened approximately two hours later.

“The technical issue with the Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft on the #A12 / #A47 has been resolved,” a Highways England Tweet said.

“The bridge is now fully open. Thanks for your patience.”
