Ford’s new Tourneo Connect is more about being pretty practical than pretty, says motoring editor Andy Russell.

The man running the car park remembered my earlier visit but it was the car I was driving that had made an impression.

At first I thought it was because he was going to make some smart comment about the Ford Tourneo Connect – a multi-purpose vehicle that looks more like a van with windows – but, with he and his wife being keen cyclists, he was taken by its hugely-practical carrying capacity and what it looked like inside rather than outside.

That is the sort of customer Ford is targeting with the Tourneo Connect and longer wheelbase Grand Tourneo Connect, the latter also available with seven seats, along with the Motability sector.

Even the shorter Tourneo Connect has a vast, flat-sided 520-litre boot under the parcel shelf while the low sill makes light work of loading. To make it even more practical you can fold the 60/40 rear seat backs flat, then tumble the whole seat upright or take them out to create a small van. The huge tailgate lifts well above head height but you need a lot of clearance behind to open it.

The cabin is equally vast for passengers with easy access through large sliding rear doors, a huge expanse of legroom and enough headroom to wear a hat... a top hat!

It may look like a van on the outside but it feels just like a car to drive and that’s because it is built on a car platform rather than a van’s. The ride is composed and supple, the handling safe and predictable but body roll is noticeable through fast bends due to its height. Large windows and huge door mirrors give good all-round visibility.

The fascia is straight out of Ford’s conventional passenger car range and there’s all the adjustment you need to find the ideal set-up at the wheel and the plastics will be as hard-wearing as they are hard.

It also uses popular engines – 100PS 1.0-litre and 150PS 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol and 95 and 115PS 1.6-litre turbo diesels.

Available in Style, Zetec and Titanium trims, equipment levels mirror conventional cars.

The Tourneo Connect is more load-lugger than looker – for many people that is the priority.
