Highways England has set out the work it carried out to improve the A47 heading to Great Yarmouth which led to overnight closures and frustrations from motorists who claimed they could not see any benefits afterwards.

Last month the Acle Straight was closed for two weeks during night times for road safety work.

The Highways Agency said the work was done on the westbound approach to the A47/A1064 roundabout at the Acle end, at the farm accesses in the vicinity of Wherryman's Way and the length between the Vauxhall Holiday Park and A149 Acle New Road/Runham Road roundabout.

It consisted of a combination of improvements to traffic signs, road markings, installation of hazard posts and kerb alignment changes.

When some closures were in place routine maintenance was also carried including weed control, gully cleaning and pot hole repairs.

Due to the restricted space on the straight, the work had to be done with a full road closure to protect the workforce and road users.

Some work, such as excavations and installing signs, would also require a road closure to complete.

One motorist Steve Taylor of Clarence Road, Gorleston, said it was 'difficult to see any tangible improvements' and John Chenery had said all he could see was a couple of signs installed and white painting at the Yarmouth end.
