The A47 will be closed in both directions on the outskirts of King’s Lynn, as phase two of a bridge repair scheme begins.

Engineers are repairing three bridges along the town’s southern bypass.

They say the work, which includes replacing defective waterproofing, can only be carried out during the warmer months and contractors have been delayed by recent rain.

Lane closures and contraflows have left drivers facing queues of up to half an hour on the A17 and A47 approaches to Lynn.

The stretch between the Pullover and Hardwick roundabouts is currently reduced to a single lane contraflow arrangement on the eastbound carriageway.

On Friday, the stretch of road road will be closed in both directions from 8pm - 6am, so the contraflow can be moved to the westbound carriage way. Diversions will be signposted.

Highways Agency project manager Ranjit Mistry said: “The next phase of the A47 bridge maintenance works has been delayed because of the recent bad weather and we have also needed to complete additional work on the bridges.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank drivers for their continued patience while we carry out this vital work. This work is progressing and we are endeavouring to finish the scheme by end of July, but this is weather permitting.”

The Highways Agency is advising drivers to plan ahead and leave some extra time for their journeys. Officials have pledged that the work will be finished by the end of this month.

But there are fears worst is yet to come in terms of congestion, with thousands expected to head for the Norfolk Arena - a stone’s throw from the roadworks - on July 26 for the Speedway World Cup.
