The A11 has reopened just ahead of the start of the rush hour, after a fatal crash closed the route for 13 hours.

Earlier indications from the Highways Agency suggested that the road could remain closed throughout the rush hour period following the two vehicle collision at around 1.45am this morning.

But a spokesman for the agency said it had been reopened at 4.40pm after damage caused by one of the cars bursting into flames was repaired.

The spokesman said: “The Highways Agency and its contractors have worked hard with partners including the police to reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so. After the police concluded their investigation at the scene, the road was inspected for damage, repaired and resurfaced.

“The road reopened at 16:40. There are residual delays in the area and drivers are advised to plan their journeys and allow extra time to travel.”

The road had been expected to reopen at around 2pm after five metres of the road was damaged when one of the vehicles involved in the crash burst into flames.

Diversions caused major bottlenecks in Brandon, with delays of up to 90 minutes being reported by motorists.

The fatal crash saw a man die and another taken to West Suffolk Hospital with minor injuries.

Any witnesses to the collision are being asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Suffolk Police on 101.
