Did she or didn’t she..? That was the question half of Norfolk was asking, after a romantic popped the question to his sweetheart - with a full-page advert in the Eastern Daily Press.
Estate agent Steve English from Wickford, Essex, was enjoying a break at the Heacham Manor Hotel at Heacham, near Hunstanton, with his girlfriend Hayley Groves.
But little did Miss Groves realise, the couple’s first-ever trip to Norfolk was about to become one she would never forget for another reason than the fine coastal scenery.
For when the couple set out for Holkham for a picnic yesterday, Mr English, 34, made sure he picked up a copy of the EDP.
After they got to the beach, Mr English suggested his 27-year-old partner took a flick through the paper, as he got down on bended knee.
“She said yes, she was just shocked,” said Mr English, who proclaimed his love for Miss Groves across the whole of page 18 in our West and Fens edition.
“I thought she might miss it if it was something smaller. I wanted to do something public but I didn’t want to embarrass her.”
Mr English’s advert said: “Hayley Groves will you marry me. I love you with all my heart. We’ve been with each other for years and my love for you grows more each year.
“You are a beautiful and caring person and have always been there for me 100pc through the bad times.
“My family adores you and I cannot imagine my life without you in it. Now we are expecting our first child I hope you will say yes and make me the happiest man alive.”
Miss Groves agreed there and then on Holkham Beach. “It was a shock more than anything,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting it at all.”
The couple, who are expecting their first baby later this year, have yet to decide on any wedding arrangements.
Mr English’s business partner Carl Temme said staff at the estate agent’s where he worked were unaware of the marriage proposal.
“He’s a bit quiet, but he does do some random stuff and he’s got quite a good sense of humour,” he said. “So this doesn’t surprise me.”
