Generator Hostels urges travellers to say knickers to knick-knacks
A pair of knickers, strange foreign alcoholic drinks and an Outback-themed toilet brush are amongst the worst souvenirs people have received from family and friends who’ve been on holiday, according to research by Generator Hostels
The leading backpacker hostel surveyed 1,000 visitors about whether they buy gifts whilst on holiday, how much they spend, and whether they like what they receive from others.
The research found that three out of five holidaymakers purchase mementos whilst away, either for themselves or friends and family. The majority, some 59 per cent, budget between £5 and £30 on gifts although one-fifth said they spend £45 or more on keepsakes.
However, one-third said they had more than 15 souvenirs back at home which they may rarely look at and one in ten confessed that the vast majority of gifts ended up in their bin.
“When people travel they often want to share their memories with family and friends back home by buying souvenirs,” said Alison Armitage, director at Generator Hostels. “However, what can be a nice thought when you’re away isn’t always appreciated when you get home.”
“The ideal souvenir has to be something you or your family and friends really need or can use on your return. You’re much better spending your money on the travel experience itself than wasting it on something that will just add to the clutter back home,” she added.
