MY FRIENDS and I were so impressed by your young readers and their admirable enthusiasm for raising money for Haiti.
It sounds like these children were acting off their own back and coming up with all these different fundraising ideas by themselves. It is so sweet and heartening that they are so concerned about the people of Haiti.
Many kids that age haven't yet developed such high morals or social awareness, so it says a lot about their parents and teachers that these kids are so lovely at such a young age.
I mean there are many adults, even, who just because the people in Haiti aren't on our doorstep, couldn't care less about them, that they are suffering one of the worst catastrophes this planet has ever seen.
Overall though, I must say, the relief response to Haiti has been staggering. People are finding money, or ways of making money, whatever their financial situation, and that is fantastic.
But what is worrying is that the money does not seem to be translating into aid out there. I turn on my TV and I see angry Haitians, desperate for food and water. I know rescue workers are doing their very best, and are doing a heroic job, but I think the scale of the disaster is just overwhelming them.
That is why it is so important that we keep on donating as much as we can and sustain this aid effort.
So hats off to these kids and I hope that people are inspired by their generosity and follow their lead.

Question: Am I right in thinking this weed is sorrel? It has appeared in my lawn after all this rain. I have a fairly weed-free lawn I use ‘feed and weed’ but I think it needs something stronger to kill the roots. (K Bennett, Wheatacre)
