Work is due to start on Monday to install electronic departure boards at Great Yarmouth bus station.

The eight screens will be fitted to shelters and provide waiting passengers with details of live and scheduled bus departures, as well as local travel news and details of upcoming events and other information.

Costing around £60,000 in total, the screens and their installation are being funded by Market Gates Shopping Centre as part of its development works.

Norfolk County Council will carry out the three days of work to install the screens, but there will be no changes to bus stops while they are being put into place.

Toby Coke, chairman of council’s environment, transport and development Committee, said: “These new electronic screens will provide passengers at Market Gates with a much clearer picture of what time the next bus is due to arrive, as well as providing other local information whilst they wait.

“It’s also pleasing these screens and their installation is being paid for by funds secured from Market Gates Shopping Centre, rather than from council tax payers.”

  • Good idea. Yarmouth town centre is lost though. Be a bit clearer for when I stagger out of the Troll Cart though *hic*

  • All you need is a printed list of times on the left hand side with what bus departs at that time . Unless the signs are Real Time , getting the data from the transponder that each bus has fitted , the electronic signs will just tell you the timings as per the timetable , regardless of delays or breakdowns .

  • They could do with these at the JPH. The stop there doesn't have any info on bus times or when they are due and incidentally some blighter has spelt the name "Padget" on the bus stop sign there...slap wrists for spelling error!

  • they have these in Norwich and the trouble is that there is nothing 'live' about them! It says a bus is due in 4 minutes, for example, 4 minutes later the bus hasn't turned up because of delay and the board just switches to the next bus due in 20 minutes time. It would be more useful if the signs worked direct from the buses current location.
