Businesses are losing trade in a north Norfolk town after a burst water main forced a main road to close.

The incident on Norwich Road, North Walsham, between the A149 and King’s Arms Street, happened at about 6pm last night.

A team from Anglian Water and police officers were called and the road was closed.

The closure is due to be in place until tomorrow while a large hole in the road is fixed.

Repairs were completed by 1am this morning but a bungalow was flooded, which forced its owners into emergency accommodation.

Liam Doyle, a partner at Computer Assist, on Norwich Road, was leaving work when he saw the water from the burst pipe.

He said: “I parked up to see water spraying up in the middle of the road a foot high. It was like a water feature. Water was gushing out of the road and out of the pavements and out of any hole possible. It was an eventful night.”

Mr Doyle said it was business as usual but it was more awkward than usual to gain access by car.

He added Norwich Road was prone to flooding during heavy rain and the drains needed sorting.

None of the businesses were flooded on this occasion.

Steve Roe, sales manager at The Nice Car Company, close to Computer Assist, said: “We have not seen a customer this morning. The road closure has affected us but to what extent we don’t know. Every day is different.”

Jerry Beauchamp, director of neighbouring bathroom business Pipe Dreams, said: “There is a lot of damage to the road which needs to be repaired. We are open but access is a problem. There is a lack of customers.”

Diversions are currently in place for motorists until the repairs are complete.
