Oak Street has closed south-bound between the Salvation Army temple and the cinema.

National Grid, which had requested the closure, said it could be closed for a total of 10 days, but will be opened next Thursday for market day.

National Grid is replacing 50 metres of gas mains in Oak Street and had put temporary traffic lights in place.

However, they say the closure was brought in because operation has become unexpectedly complex.

A diversion is in place via Highfield Road, Queen’s Road and Norwich Street.

The closure is scheduled to continue until Wednesday.

The road will reopen on Thursday for market day and close again on Friday for a further five days if required.

The existing iron mains are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes that will last to the end of the century if left undisturbed in the ground.

National Grid say the work is essential and will keep the gas flowing safely and reliably, keeping homes and businesses connected to the energy they use.

National Grid project manager Kevin Pettit said: “Our work in Oak Street is essential to help secure gas supplies for the people of Fakenham.

“We are sorry if we cause any inconvenience, but will be a short term inconvenience for a long term benefit. “
