Twenty-six young people attended an open day at Wymondham College where they got an insight into the youth band and were given the opportunity to play in front of selectors. The event included tutorials from experts and a question and answer session.

The open day comes as the youth brass band is set to play at the BBC Proms in London at the Royal Albert Hall and in Beccles and the Snape Proms in Suffolk this month.

Philip Biggs, administrator of the band, said the open day went “tremendously well” and there were a lot of talented young brass and percussion players in the area.

The band will perform at St Michael’s Church, New Market, Beccles, on Thursday, August 9, and Snape Maltings, Suffolk, on Friday, August 10, then at the BBC Proms on August 12.

Cornet soloist for the concerts in Suffolk will be James Fountain, the band’s long-standing principal cornet player, who until recently was principal cornet of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
