Crowds entering Latitude

There were traffic delays, sweltering temperatures and tents to put up - but Latitude was in high spirits as it welcomed festival-goers yesterday.

Revellers poured into the Henham Park site from the early afternoon, with the A12 and A145 turning into a sea of campervans and cars jam-packed with camping gear.

There were early headaches for drivers though after a lorry crash on the A12 left the road closed and diversions in place for people travelling from the south of the site.

On site, the campsite soon filled up, and crowds of people began exploring the main stage area. Food stands were serving and the various tents and arenas were undergoing final checks before tomorrow’s first acts took to the stage.

While the music stages remained quiet before today’s bands kicked off proceedings, there was some entertainment on hand for early birds.

The Film and Music stage, theatre, and literary arenas all held performances, while the Waterfront stage offered a taste of things to come with a performance from the World tango champions, German Cornejo and Gisela Galeassi.

Temperatures at the site soared to 23 degrees as campers lugged their gear on site and set up camp.

And after initial fears over potential rain during the weekend, the latest forecasts suggest the site will avoid showers and stay hot throughout, with temperatures peaking at 24 degrees.

35,000 people are expected over the weekend, with the majority due to arrive today, according to the festival’s organisers.

Lily Allen is the festival’s first headliner, taking to the Obelisk Arena stage tonight from 9.30pm.
