Archant

It’s time to tune up your turnips. The London Vegetable Orchestra is heading to north Norfolk.

The band specialises in making musical instruments out of common-or-garden vegetables and then playing a range of popular tunes like Elvis Parsley’s “Blue Swede Shoes” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Auberjean”.

They are starring in this year’s Aylsham Food Festival next month - but are holding a “taster” session on Saturday September 27.

The orchestra is offering free workshops for all the family at Aylsham High School.

People just have to register at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk and get along to the school at 11am.

The London Vegetable Orchestra was founded three years ago, and has appeared at festivals and on television.

It creates its brass section from courgettes, squashes, peppers and cassava roots, its soaring winds from carrot recorders, and a banging percussion section including freshly carved pumpkins.

As well as the workshops, Slow Food Aylsham, organisers of the food festival, will be offering informal cooking workshops at the high school.

They are free with all ingredients, equipment and even aprons.

To book on the workshops visit the website.

The Food Festival itself runs from October 2-5. The London Vegetable Orchestra’s performances are on Saturday October 4 at 12.45pm and 1.20pm.

There will be a range of other activities during the festival.

In the Market Place there will be cooking demonstrations by local chefs, roving magicians, jazz and band music and a farmers’ market.

The traditional Big Slow Breakfast in the Town Hall brings the event to a close.

Tickets costing £7 can be bought from Barnwells newsagents and Salad Days Fruit and Veg, both in the Market Place.

There is more information about this year’s Aylsham Food Festival at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk.
