Meeting Mister Pepys, a spoken-word piece by Fakenham writer Caroline Gilfillan is being performed at the Cley14 Festival.

It is being staged in St Margaret’s Church on Saturday July 12 at 7.30pm.

The piece, which toured Norfolk and London with great success last year, features poems, monologues, diary extracts and song - along with fabulous costumes.

It gives a taste of the life and times of Samuel Pepys - an extraordinary character married to an extraordinary wife who was his match in terms of spirit and temper.

Pepys observed the Fire of London in 1666, and travelled to The Hague on the ship that returned King Charles II to England and the throne - though he became disenchanted with the monarch when he witnessed his lavish spending, debauchery and laziness close at hand.

A republican in his youth, and a royalist during his career as an administrator for the Navy, Samuel’s life took more twists and turns than you can imagine.

The piece is being performed against the backdrop of the Cley 14 exhibition, which can be visited before the performance starts. Tickets cost £10, and can be booked by emailing Caroline.Gilfillan@btinternet.com, via the Cley14 website, or purchased at the exhibition or on the door.
