A gingerbread house, Christmas fairies, Santa Claus and a snowman are among the festive images decorating Christmas art created by school pupils for the NORWICHRISTMAS Art Trail.

The trail will be in Norwich until Twelfth Night and sees the art work of 18 schools displayed in venues across the city. We visited every school while the pupils were decorating their present stack sculptures for the trail and will be featuring each school online and in the paper.

Today is the turn of Sewell Park College and Avenue Junior School.

Avenue Junior School

Santa Claus, a snowman, and the Christmas tradition of pantomime are among the festive favourites featured in the present stack designed by children from Avenue Junior School.

Thirty-five pupils from year four took part in the project, and their creative work is being displayed at Norwich Playhouse, in St George's Street.

Lesley Matthews, year four teacher and art coordinator at the Avenue Road school, said: 'The children are really proud of what they have achieved, they had a really good time creating the stack of presents and have been really enthusiastic.

'As a school we do a lot of 2D art work and this was great opportunity to do more 3D work on a big scale.'

Sewell Park College

A gingerbread house, Christmas fairies and Santa delivering presents are among the many festive scenes incorporated into the design by Sewell Park College pupils.

Twelve pupils studying AS Art at the St Clements Hill school, in the north of Norwich, were involved in the yuletide masterpiece which is being displayed at Aviva's Marble Hall in Surrey Street. The students were divided into four groups according to the themes they were studying in class, with each group working on a different layer in the present stack.

Alice Leon, one of the pupils involved in the project explained, 'The architecture group decorated the second stack as a gingerbread house, while the portrait and body features group decorated the bottom stack producing a range of different images including festive Manga complete with stencil snowflakes, huge lips biting holly, robins and a Father Christmas delivering presents. The top layer comprised beautifully drawn and delicately detailed festive fairies.

'To finish it all off the bows at the top of the stack were decorated with red and white glitter for that final festive touch!'

Peter Hubery, head of design at the school, added: 'We have really enjoyed this unique opportunity to produce original artwork that will be exhibited at one of the key events in Norwich's festive calendar.

'It has been challenging but thoroughly rewarding, especially when we saw the final piece finished and assembled for the first time.'

The NORWICHRISTMAS Art Trail is being delivered by NORCA (Norwich and Norfolk Community Arts) on behalf of the Norwich Business Improvement District, and it aims to encourage more people to explore the city this Christmas.
