Electro-pop five piece Metronomy first came to Norwich in 2007, backing Foals at the Arts Centre.

That night saw the Devon band fiddling nervously behind synthesizers, each with a pulsing neon light strung round their neck.

Seven years and four albums later, the band is a much more assured proposition.

They came to the UEA riding high on the release of latest album, Love Letters, which crashed the top ten earlier this month.

The throbbing lights and jangling nerves are gone, replaced by a more conventional look and line-up.

Joseph Mount, the band’s singer and mastermind, makes an unassuming front man, perched behind keyboards or strapped to a guitar.

His band-mates aren’t much into showmanship either. But it’s the tunes that are the star here.

While the band might be static, the night’s packed crowd can’t help but move.

The insistence of I’m Aquarius, the first single from the new album, prompts a sea of bobbing heads, while the album’s brassy title track puts a little helium in the crowd’s shoes.

There’s also a lot of love for tracks from third album, The English Riviera, which launched them into mainstream consciousness.

Before getting into their standard-bearing single, The Look, Mount tells the crowd he’s glad to be back in Norwich. As the kids down the front dance and sing along, it’s clear they’re glad he’s back too.
