Boy George thrilled the audience at the Waterfront with old and new songs.

There is perfection to Boy George’s songs, whether on record or live – and that shone through at the Waterfront.

In a show which included songs from his most recent album (This Is What I Do), there were also the crowd-pleasers he had promised to deliver.

The new material – Live Your Life, Bigger than War, Any Road, Love and Danger and Nice and Slow –
sat comfortably with the big hits, which flowed freely, throughout
the show in Norwich on Friday night.

Mid-way through, the Culture Club singer told a full house that the best bit was about to arrive, and he was right.

The live version of Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? was amazing; a dreamy, drawn out intro before hitting the pop-reggae beat that defines his music.

It was an unorthodox show in some ways. George and his nine-piece band leaving the stage after about an hour and a quarter, returning seemingly for an encore and then proceeding to play for another 45 minutes.

The whole two-hour show was a blend of classic songs and the blue-eyed soul and reggae that you would expect from Boy George.

The massive 80s number one hit Karma Chameleon, Church of the Poison Mind and Time, were sung alongside cover versions ranging from the superb Everything I Own and T-Rex’s Get It On to Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World before rounding off with Hare Krishna-inspired song Bow Down Mister.

Boy George retains a tremendous rapport with his audience and is clearly enjoying playing his songs live again.
