Oblivion stars Tom Cruise as a veteran who is assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources; however he begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.

Now I think I would be stating the obvious if I admitted that there has been a lot of hype surrounding Oblivion. I have heard a few people say that they enjoyed it, but for the first time in many years I went into this movie completely blind. I didn't really know what to expect. Admittedly I have seen the trailer a couple of times, but reviews wise, apart from a couple of mentions on the radio I had no idea as to whether it was going to be good or not, but from my initial reaction this is not a good movie.

As soon as the film begun I found it hard to get into. Up until the half-hour point I was waiting for it to get better, but it never did. It remains very generic of the ideas we'd come to expect from a sci-fi picture and it really doesn't bring anything new to the table, I can think of many films I've seen that are similar to this, and that's probably the films biggest problem. There's simply no passion or originality involved whatsoever.

In terms of performances it's a typical Tom Cruise performance. If you like Tom Cruise like I do, then you'll be pleased to hear that he does a good job, yet I couldn't help but think that he didn't really have that much to do here. He plays the type of character that anyone could play as does Morgan Freeman who plays his typical self. In general the performances are decent, but nothing spectacular, however I will say this Olga Kurylenko is not good in this film. Her character feels almost lifeless, and that's another problem that I had with Oblivion. I didn't feel any connection to the movie at all, it was just boring.

Sure the special effects are good but I think that's a no brainer given that it's a science-fiction film made with a budget of $120 million.

Although the films setting is almost entirely post-apocalyptic, one positive I drew from the movie was its design. Sure it's based on recycled ideas, but seeing all these iconic landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty buried under rubble is almost haunting.

Unlike Kosinski's last film TRON: Legacy the films score is not as sleek or as stylish, in fact it's actually quite loud and overbearing. The action sequences and droids leave a lot to be desired as there just a genuine eye-sore, like I said everything in this film feels recycled and I understand that the director has stated it's a throwback to sci-fi films of the seventies, but unlike some of those films it fails to capture the viewer's imagination, leaving me bored, fed-up and with a splitting headache, resulting in a miserable experience.
