Norwich art project gives a whole new meaning to ordering a takeaway

Takeaway Art has been set up by Norwich-based Alina Sandu and aims to champion a different artist every month.

Art fans will be able to follow the artist's progress on their latest work via the Takeaway Art website and on social media, and those who sign up to the project for fee will have a piece of original art by the artist delivered to their door at the end of the month.

Miss Sandu, 32, who studied MA Design at Norwich University of the Arts, hopes Takeaway Art will help local artists reach a wider audience.

'There are lots of talented artists in Norwich, art is everywhere around you,' she said.

'I have lived in Norwich for about eight years. It is such a nice community here and I just wanted to help promote it.'

She added that she also hoped the project would encourage more people to enjoy art.

'Art can be affordable and fun. It's not just a stuffy thing you find in a museum with a bit of blurb you don't understand. It can be surprising,' she said.

The first artist Takeaway Art is focussing on is Norwich-based printmaker Jo Stafford who runs Print to the People in Pitt Street.

Miss Sandu said: 'Jo does lots of traditional screen printing and really high-tech stuff as well. For Takeaway Art she is screen-printing on wood and then laser cutting it.'

People following the artist's progress on Takeaway Art's Facebook page and Twitter feed this month will see that her work will feature bears and a winter landscape - but they will not see the finished result until it is posted through their letter box.

Miss Sandu, who lives in the north of the city said: 'With the Takeaway Art boxes you open them up without knowing exactly what is inside. Every month it is a little bit like Christmas morning - you open up the box and there is a surprise inside.'

Miss Sandu, who lives in the north of the city, said she hoped to feature a mixture of new and established artists.

Next month the featured artist will be Great Yarmouth-based tattoo and graffiti artist Barry Fether who is branching out into illustration.

Other artists taking part in the future include stencil artist Ruth Knapp and illustrators Charli Vince and Morwenna Farrell.
