A winter movie programme is heralding a new era at Sheringham Little Theatre, as it showcases its new digital projection equipment.

New films such as Les Miserables and remastered classics like Lawrence of Arabia are in a busy agenda through January and February.

Since its launch last November the revamped film offering in the 180-seater venue has already drawn big crowds, including three sell-out screenings of the Skyfall Bond movie.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the new set up provided quality pictures and much sooner than before.

“Previous we would show a film six months after it came out, now it is within four to six weeks,” she added.

Among the theatre’s future plans were setting up film clubs for younger and older fans, who would also have a say in what was shown, as well as staging special events and festivals.

The power of watching films in an intimate venue was driven home during screenings of Warhorse, said Mrs Thompson.

“Everybody was crying, and people were comforting each other - sharing tissues as well as the experience,” she added.

The new screen version of the French revolution stage musical Les Miserables was of extra interest to Sheringham people among the flag waving soldiers at the barricades was Killian Donnelly who wrote and co-directed the theatre’s pantomine.

“We are really excited about seeing that - because while he was writing our panto he was filming alongside Russell Crowe,” said Mrs Thompson.

Other highlights of the winter movie season were the lavish costume drama Anna Karenina, Private Peaceful the follow-up to Warhorse, and remastered classics such as Lawrence of Arabia and The Shining.
