When the GoGoHares charity art trail decorates Norfolk next year there will be a very special character paying a poignant tribute to the bravery and dedication of nurses such as Norfolk’s Edith Cavell during the First World War.

The GoGoHare called Poppy was unveiled for the first time during a special ceremony by the graveside of Nurse Cavell at Norwich Cathedral today.

She is the fourth of the sculptures to be revealed for the Norfolk art trail being organised by children’s charity Break and Wild in Art, and which will run from June 24 to September 8 next year.

The trail will be marking Break’s 50th anniversary and also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Poppy has been designed by artist Mik Richardson and is sponsored by Norwich-based financial advisers Almary Green.

During today’s ceremony, Carl Lamb, Almary Green’s managing director, laid a poppy wreath at Nurse Cavell’s grave and the Rev Dr Peter Doll, Canon Librarian at the cathedral, marked the occasion with a short prayer of remembrance.

Mr Lamb said: “1918 was a significant year in British history and I wanted our hare to pay tribute to everyone who served in the First World War, not just the men on the front line.

“Nurses were hugely important throughout the war, often working close to the trenches, under heavy fire. Our Poppy embodies the warmth, care and courage shown by real wartime nurses and I’m sure she’ll be a great favourite during the trail.”

Michael Rooney, head of commercial services at Break, said: “Poppy is a most beautiful piece of art that is both educational and inspiring. We hope that people will enjoy seeing her and learn more about such an important chapter in British history. That Poppy, might help to raise money for vulnerable children, young people and families in 2018 is yet another legacy of some amazing people.”
