Her disdain for David Cameron and his Tory government is well-documented, but Josie Long left politics outside the Comedy Tent at Latitude Festival.

Instead, the 32-year-old turned her analytical gaze on herself, reflecting on past – and very recent – heartbreak.

Self-deprecating throughout, Long charted the ghosts of past romances, reflected on falling in love too quickly and pondered the day she began to feel old.

The latter came, she said, upon seeing a 16-year-old McDonalds waitress with a love bite the size of a “full slice of ham” and realising she would never have that experience again – without someone thinking she was “horribly ill”.

She joked that, “like the war”, she did not realise how bad her most recent relationship was while she was in it.

Flitting between anecdotes, Long was pensive without being self-pitying, breaking up the flow with her best take of Bob Dylan singing Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson.

The subject matter was heavy in places, but you sense she’ll be alright.
