Norfolk is classified as a semi-arid region. Discussions of global warming in Norfolk more often than not revolve around the issue of water.

The Roundtable for Sustainable Development for the Eastern Region has formed a group to specifically look at the impacts of water shortage as a result of the impacts of climate change.

In light of the above, it is reassuring to know that Anglian Water, the company responsible for the majority of water supply and treatment in Norfolk, are beginning to work with climate change forecasts. Making plans that provide provisions for the next 15 to 30 years, and taking into account the increased probability of extreme events.

The droughts of 1996/7 sparked the company into action. Their investment of 25million over the last few years to increase the flexibility and efficiency of the supply system has already ensured that the region has a secure supply for the next 10 years.

Now the company is looking to innovative technologies as part of the answer to ensure longer term water security.

Groundwater recharge schemes, effluent re-use (for industrial processes) and de-salinisation are all being investigated as possible mechanisms by which water supply can be preserved well into the future.
