TXU Europe (Eastern Energy), the major electricity supplier to Norfolk, are searching for more sustainable ways of supplying their product.

Electricity generation has traditionally been seen as the major culprit when it comes to CO2 emissions.

It is true that a quarter of all emissions are generated in the production of electricity, but the proportion is falling, and the general attitude that we can 'Sit back and let the energy companies sort climate change out' is no longer valid.

All the big utilities accept climate change as an issue. Eddie Hyams of TXU suggests: 'It is now an underlying assumption when all decisions are taken'..

What they do not accept however, is that they can progress towards more sustainable generation technologies without the backing of government, and, more importantly, society.

Eddie Hyams continued: 'Society expects 'they', whoever 'they' are, to do something about it the technology is available, but society is still prejudiced towards large remote power sources, rather than local sustainable generation'.

Paul Wilkinson of EcoTech who manages the wind turbine at Swaffham agrees. 'EcoTech was established to challenge people's preconceptions about renewables, in a hope that the major hurdle to market infiltration - planning consent - could be overcome.'
