One possibility for the future of Norfolk's climate is that it might
actually get colder.
Should this happen,
it would be down to an unexpected event - a flip in the climate
of a local area, triggered by rising global temperatures. Scientists
suggest these types of events may happen, but are unable to determine
their likelihood with any kind of certainty.
The possibility
of a change in the strong ocean currents that transport heat around
the world is suggested as one such event. The North Atlantic Drift,
for example, which passes right by Norfolk's front door, could potentially
cease to exist. At the moment the North Atlantic Drift keeps the
UK a balmy few degrees higher than we would otherwise be.
Another area of
concern is the behaviour of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS).
It is possible that a more rapid sea level rise than suggested in
current scenarios could occur should the WAIS begin to disintegrate.
