When is Pancake Day?

In 2018 Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as Pancake Day, falls on Tuesday, February 13, preceding the first day of Lent.

Why do we celebrate Pancake Day?

The day takes place each year exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday and is traditionally celebrated by eating pancakes in order to use up rich indulgent foods such as sugar and milk before the 40-day fasting season begins.

Where can you celebrate Pancake Day in Norfolk?

• The Albatros, Wells-next-the-Sea

This former Dutch cargo ship was built n 1899 as a North Sea Clipper but is now moored alongside the Quay or Wells-next-the-sea and serves as a bar, restaurant, music venue and B&B. Among the food offered is a range of sweet and savoury Dutch pancakes with toppings such as asparagus, ham and cheese and chocolate and double cream. If you're in the fine city on Pancake Day head to Davey Place next to Virgin Money, where you'll find Christophe's mobile crepe service, offering sweet and savoury French crepes. Owner, Chris Smith says his most popular pancakes are The Mont Blanc, which contains strawberries, chocolate and marshmallows and The Nutty Monkey made with Nutella and bananas.

• House, Norwich

Tucked away towards the end of St Benedicts Street you'll find House - a cosy little eatery that literally makes you feel as if you're dining at a friend's home. Head here for fluffy American style pancakes with berries and a mug of Fairtrade coffee.

• Nick's Diner, Deopham

Established in 1983, Nick's Diner is a family run restaurant that is filled with a range of historic memorabilia and sets the mood for customers by playing music from the 50s and 60s. Their menu features homemade pancakes which come with cream or ice cream plus a range of toppings to choose from. Options include chocolate, maple syrup, lemon curd, black cherry and strawberry.

• Byfords, Holt

Byfords cafe and B&B in North Norfolk serves a range of food throughout the day, with their Breakfast menu featuring buttermilk pancakes. Toppings include lemon and sugar, jam and butter as well as crispy smoked bacon and maple syrup.

How to make your own perfect pancakes

Ingredients

• 100g plain flour

• 2 large eggs

• 300ml milk

• Sunflower or vegetable oil - for cooking

Method

• Put eggs, flour, milk into a bowl and combine to make a smooth batter.

• Set a frying pan over a medium heat and add a little sunflower or vegetable oil.

• Add batter mix to the pan and cook pancakes until golden on each side.

• Serve with a topping of your choice - lemon and sugar, ice cream, chocolate spread or strawberries.
