I've noticed that a lot of people are calling for an end to high-rise residential buildings; no more buildings higher than three storeys or 40 feet.

Yet if this invitation to developers was brought in, how long would it be before similar letter writers began to complain, as the last hectare or so of land vanished under continued ribbon development linking Norwich and Thetford, where has all our farmland gone?

High-rise is essential but not Grenfell style. That surely shows the undesirability of public bodies, councils or government, building such blocks. Public bodies should concentrate on insisting on high safety specifications being enforced in such buildings and let private or business firms worry about paying for them.

That way democracy, local and national, really would be seen to be working for the good of all those who otherwise have little or no proper voice at all. And, moreover, by inviting developers to build high-rise, whilst at the same time actively checking into every facet of their constructions, our wondrous countryside would continue as country far into the future.
