A new year always brings such promise. Twelve, uncharted, months stretch ahead, offering up boundless opportunities. With a new year comes the chance to put right previous wrongs and to tackle matters with fresh resolve.
And resolve will be needed in 2018. For all the optimism which comes from looking ahead to a brand new year, there are real challenges which must be tackled... and tackled head on.
The last few months of 2017 were painful ones for hundreds of people in our region who were given the devastating news that they would be losing their jobs.
Losing the likes of Britvic, Multiyork and BAE Systems are major blows for this region, as would be the loss of the Construction Industry Training Board in Bircham Newton.

This region can ill afford to lose these sorts of organisations. The year ahead must see the likes of our MPs, council leaders and business communities banging the drum for why Norfolk and Suffolk should be where companies should be moving to, not leaving behind.
Better infrastructure will be an important factor in that, which is why pressure must not be let up on demanding better rail and road links.
And it is also essential that solutions are found to funding issues which have contributed to the poor state of our mental health trust and to head off the very serious looming crisis in adult social care.
