Germaine Greer was born in Melbourne, Australia and is one of the main feminist voices in the United Kingdom today.
She later came to the UK to study for a PhD at Cambridge University.
Her first book The Female Eunuch, published in 1970, turned her into a household name as it was a worldwide best-seller. The book argues that women are forced to accept submissive roles in society to fulfill men's thoughts of what being a woman means.
Her other books include Sex and Destiny, where she critiqued Western attitudes towards sexuality, The Change and A Beautiful Boy.
However she is known for saying controversial things on a range of subjects, which included offending the transgender community in 2016 when she claimed that a man making changes to his body in order to change sex 'doesn't make you a woman'.
Yet whatever the reaction to her comments, she is often known to defend them publicly and stand by what she has said.
