The 10 best places I ate at in Norfolk over 2017

Our EDP food reviewer looks back on a year of reviews and picks her favourites from 2017.

Writing this list was hard. We have reviewed so many excellent restaurants this year that I’d like to include them all, but here are a few that really stood out. Hint: They mostly involved cheese.

The Wallow, Norwich

The first EAT Norfolk food review all the way back in February is still one of my favourites. As a long-time fan of the wine machines, cheese boards and atmosphere it’s still the place to go for a relaxed evening out.

While the beloved goats’ cheese and olive bon bons are no longer on the menu, the standard of fresh, wholesome food for under £15 per main has not dropped – in fact it keeps getting better and better. Their vegetarian options are beyond wonderful; I wish I could eat that spelt & wild leek ‘risotto’, with chargrilled leek, every day of the week.

The Dining Rooms, Norwich

It wasn’t long after under-going a revamp and hiring a new chef that we visited and it is still one of the shining stars of Norwich’s restaurant scene. The ever-changing menu never goes too far wrong and enjoying grilled goats’ cheese with gnocchi, trimmed with purple sprouting broccoli and celeriac drizzled with sorrel and tarragon sauce in their beautiful courtyard was definitely one of this year’s foodie highlights.

Eric’s Fish and Chips, Thornham

Some may have felt my original review of Eric’s was a little OTT but, six months on, I still feel quite strongly that this is one of the best chippies in the world.

Not only are Eric Snaith and his dream team some of the most delightful people you will ever meet but – and you may think I’m being dramatic – the gruyere and spinach arancini balls, and baby gem with homemade salad cream, are some of the best things I’ve ever eaten and I might do a little weep right now that it’s so far from my Norwich office and I can’t fulfil my cravings.

East Twenty Six, Norwich

Was there ever any doubt that East Twenty Six wouldn’t be one of the best places I’ve eaten this year? They consistently produce an array of unique flavours that words cannot describe and I recommend it for any occasion.

The White Horse Inn, Brancaster

Looking back it seems I was a little disappointed in our starters and didn’t totally love my main course but the White Horse certainly earns a spot in the top 10 for the first class service, breathtaking views and that fresh, luscious tomato bread.

Warwick St Social

I was a little taken aback by this place as each course was pretty exceptional - but did I really expect anything less from chef patron Daniel Smith? The goats’ cheese and caramelised onion bread and coffee panna cotta with white chocolate mousse, chocolate gel and amaretto crème fraiche sorbet were yum!

The Boars, Spooner Row, Wymondham

This year I discovered The Boars and I’m so glad I did. The authentic and uncontrived interiors mould perfectly with the menu – which is presented as a newspaper – and the Norfolk Binham Blue and sticky red onion jam tartlet with pickled shallots, walnut pesto and fig balsamic glaze is still one of the best I’ve ever had.

Creake Abbey Café, North Creake

This out-of-the-way café more than holds its own among the fancier restaurants. It was yet another surprise of 2017 and I loved the inventive menu; and their cheese board was perhaps the best I’d ever had – it’s a pretty good bargain too!

Bishop’s Dining Room and Wine Bar, Norwich

While I didn’t personally do this review, any place my esteemed colleague Lauren calls ‘worthy of a plate lick’ can’t be overlooked. Upmarket without pretension. She called the fresh tuna ceviche with roasted peanuts, salmon crackling and lime and coriander dressing ‘a stroke of genius’.
