It looks more like an ancient castle than a modern day home.

But now you could be the proud owner of a new property with an octagonal turret and a two-storey tower - with the odd medieval fragment to boot borrowed from Oxford University.

Bedfords estate agents has put the striking Grade II Listed Turret House, in Heacham, near Hunstanton, on the market for £475,000.

The historic building dates back to 1830 - but it was not until later in the 19th century that the original red-brick property was embellished with the turret, tower and the stonework which adorn the house today.

The property was drastically altered and extended by Robert Gunther, a scientist, zoologist and founder of the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford.

The turret can only accessed by a ladder from the garage and not through the main house.

Ben Marchbank, from Bedfords, said: “It’s so rare for such a quirky and distinctive property to come up for sale.”

The house also includes marble gargoyles, mullioned windows and dressed stonework. Inside it offers a hall, sitting room, garden room, dining room, a kitchen and three bedrooms. Outside, is a good sized walled garden and a garage.
