A mystery buyer has made an offer on a former ironmongers in Aylsham - with contracts due to exchange shortly

A former ironmongers store in the centre of Aylsham is under offer - but the buyer wants to remain anonymous for now.

The Grade II listed Clarkes building did not sell at auction at the end of September but bidding stopped at £420,000, just short of the guide price of £450,000-£500,000.

However, Henry Cockerton, managing the sale on behalf of Brown & Co in Holt, confirmed today that the property is under offer with contracts due to exchange ‘shortly.’

The building is considered a rarity on the market because of its size, history and its location in the centre of Aylsham. It does, however, need considerable work doing to it because it has lain empty for some years after the store, run by the late Alan Clarke, closed. And being a listed building, whoever buys it will need to work within the necessary constraints.
