The Buck, Honingham.
The Buck, Honingham.
Tucked just off the A47 between Norwich and Dereham it could be easy to miss the Honingham Buck.

But it's worth a diversion for a drink and a bite to eat at this old coaching inn, which dates back to the 16th century.

It still retains many of its period features, including low beamed ceilings, and the name it took from its owner, John Buck, when the first alehouse licence was issued in 1789.

Mentioned in the famous diaries of Parson James Woodforde is John's son, a local Blacksmith known locally as Robert Moonshine - he was reputed to be a notorious Norfolk smuggler who provided gin and brandy to the parson.

The pub has a small cosy traditional bar, containing cask ales.

And it has an extensive menu, updated weekly on the pub's website. They have everything from ciabattas and jacket potatoes for lunch to three course a la carte main evening meals - offering everything from game pie to chicken balti.

There is also a pick and mix menu, children's menu and vegetarian menu.

Food can be ordered Monday to Saturday noon to 2.15pm and 5.30pm to 9.30pm and on Sundays from noon to 8.30pm.

It is open noon to 3pm and 5pm to 11pm Monday to Friday, noon to 11pm on Saturday and noon to 10.30pm on Sundays. It is currently shut on Mondays until June 22, 2009.
