King's Lynn ready to make history

Last updated:

King's Lynn racer Emiliano Sanchez plans to celebrate with doubles all round should the Stars clinch the Premier League KO Cup against Edinburgh. (7.45pm)

The popular Argentine is confident Rob Lyon's men can wipe out a seven point first leg deficit in front a bumper Norfolk Arena crowd to clinch an historic second Saddlebow grand slam.

Sanchez is also gunning for his second career treble after sweeping the board at Premier League level with Hull back in 2004.

Lynn's experienced rider is convinced this year's Premier League champions and Premier Trophy winners can summon one last herculean effort to sign off in style.

“We want to finish on a massive high and this is our possibility to make history,” said Sanchez. “We've rode great all year so we want to go out on a great note. For me, on a personal level it would be unbelievable to put my name in history after winning it at Hull. That was in the past - now I have a chance to do it in the present. I am a guy who always focuses on the present. I'd much rather look at today rather than yesterday and what I can still achieve in my career. That is what counts.”

Sanchez is taking nothing for granted despite restricting Edinburgh to a seven point first leg lead. The Monarchs also head south without influential German rider Kevin Wolbert who suffered a suspected broken finger in Edinburgh's heavy 59-32 promotion/relegation first leg defeat at Elite League Belle Vue on Monday.

Wolbert top scored for the visitors with paid 12 in last week's Saddlebow second leg of Lynn's aggregate play-off final defeat. Monarchs' officials will draft in a late guest replacement with Edinburgh already employing rider replacement for Wolbert's injured team mate Michal Rajkowski.

“Edinburgh will not be easy because they want to win a cup final as much as we do,” said Sanchez. “They still have a lead and they went well here recently but I think we are stronger now. Going to Belle Vue and getting hammered will not have any bearing as this is a different meeting. They probably expected a big defeat. We just need to concentrate on pulling back seven points and do our best.

“We stopped at a petrol station just outside Edinburgh before the first leg and the team manager said he expected something between a 10 and 15 point defeat. Everyone was more than happy to come away losing by only seven. It was nice to see Buster Chapman our boss and Tomas (Topinka) our captain in the pits. It makes a difference and it also helped the track was wet on the night. That was an advantage for us because it was not in normal condition for the home team. Now we must finish it off and be fully concentrated on one final match.”

Jan Graversen's paid 14 haul underpinned the Stars' battling 48-41 first leg Armadale defeat and Sanchez is adamant Lynn's famed team spirit has carried Lyon's depleted squad to the brink of a second grand slam.

“Everything just clicked right from the start and we all get on together,” said Sanchez. “Apart from me and Tom they are young guys but it has been a superb year. Chris Schramm has led the team when Tom got injured and when we've needed someone to step up they have. That's why we've been so competitive since March - which is a long way, let me tell you.

“Winning the league is the main but you start out looking to win all three and we have that chance. It's like a pyramid with each trophy as important as the next one as you go along and try to finish the job off.”

Sanchez is already looking beyond Wednesday's winner-takes-all finale to helping the club continue its domination of speedway's second tier next season.

“I really hope to speak to Buster and Rob about that by the end of this week to see if I have a chance to stay,” he said. “I need to know whether I have to find myself another club. I would be delighted to stay but speedway has so many rules with the averages and sometimes the management have to go in a different direction. One thing for sure, I am going to be waiting at King's Lynn's door.”
