End of era as twins call it a day

Last updated: 30/10/2009 10:41:00

The end of an era has arrived at Royal Cromer with the retirement from golf of the Woodhouse twins after 55 years of continuous membership.

Eric and Reg Woodhouse, who are 83, are reckoned to have walked about 45,000 miles around the course, during this time - that's almost twice around the world.

During their membership Eric, whose last handicap was 25, has had four holes in one. Reg, who played off 22, had one ace.

The tales they tell of the golf club and course include a memory of one August Bank Holiday Monday when they had to shelter on the fifth hole because of a freak snowstorm which lasted 1½ hours.

On another occasion a young lad who was caddying was completely blown over the cliffs by very strong winds.

Eric and Reg have been made honorary members of the club.

  • Halesworth is the latest local club to be awarded the GolfMark in recognition of their hard work and dedication to both junior and beginner golf.

The English Golf Union (EGU) and English Women's Golf Association (EWGA) developed the GolfMark award to identify and acknowledge golf facilities in England that were junior and beginner friendly.

The GolfMark award also integrates Sport England's Clubmark award - a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised across the country.
