Holt determined to halt minnows

Grant Holt doesn't believe in FA Cup fairytales - and says Norwich City will be doing all they can to ruin Paulton Rovers' big day at the weekend.

The first round clash with the Southern League minnows at their west country ground takes precedence now that the Canaries have got the weekend's League One trip to Stockport out of the way.

And Holt - who took his tally in all competitions to 12 with a brace at Edgeley Park - insists it's business as usual: “It's a job,” said Holt. “At the end of the day it's two teams - and we won't be giving them any special grace because they are non-league or do them any favours.

“We will go there and try and beat them and do the best we can.”

City's primary ambition is promotion, but they also have a Johnstone's Paint Trophy quarter-final next week at Swindon - and a chance of a Wembley final - plus the financial benefits of the FA Cup.

“It's a case of getting away from the league and concentrating on the cup,” said Holt, who has now scored seven times in his last eight games.

“We want to do as well as we can in any competition, any game, we are involved in.

“We will be going there with a strong team, I wouldn't have thought the manager will make too many changes. We go there to try and win the game, which we know we should do.

“We have got a team spirit at the moment which is fantastic and it will be no different to any league game we will play in.”

Holt's scoring form could have included his first league hat-trick on Saturday - although he scored one earlier this season at Yeovil in the Carling Cup, and a year ago scored five in Shrewsbury's 7-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win at Wycombe.

“Obviously it's nice to see the goals going in but it's about wins and I'm

just glad that the team's winning,” he said.

“It's good to see us creeping up the league, we're getting within touching distance now. We have got the belief and the desire where we know where we want to be and we're going in the right direction for that.

“We just want to be there or thereabouts. We know what we can do, we have put a run together, we just need to stay in that position now.

“We're not looking at anyone else, we are just worrying about ourselves. If we keep going out and doing the job we know we can week in, week out we know we won't be far off.

“We have got a chance to get away from the league next week in the FA Cup and concentrate on that and then back to work against Tranmere.”

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland Premiership club Newry City's young duo Ruairi Devlin and Paddy Mooney are reportedly set for a week long trial with the Canaries.

Teenage striker Devlin only made his senior debut in last weekend's league game against Linfield but has been a prolific scorer at youth and reserve levels.
