Glenn Taylor (Shorter Rochford RT) and Mark Arnold (TT-W/Pedal Revolution) continued their respective runs of sporting course time trial wins with Taylor taking the Great Yarmouth CC 25 at St Olaves and Arnold winning West Suffolk Wheelers 21 miler by a massive 3:54 from Nick Jackson of Cambridge CC.
Nino Piccoli opened his time trial season with a clear win in the CC Breckland 10-mile time trial, finishing in 22:02, 61 seconds clear of Paul Davis (St Ives CC) and 1:17 ahead of east district champion James Eman (Anglia Velo).
Young riders put in some sterling performances in the rain-soaked fourth round of the Winter Series mountain bike races, with 18-year-old James Ashby (Fat Birds) having a clear win in the 18-39 category and 15-year-old-Josh Hannan (Extreme Sports Therapy) recovering from breaking a bone in his foot five weeks previously to win a hotly contested junior race.
Racing indoors certainly has its attractions at this time of the year and the Watt Bike Leagues in Norwich are now in their fifth week. In the early evening session Helen Oliver leads the women while cycling photographer Mark Cozens tops the men's league.
To prove that cyclists are a hardy breed, all planned events went ahead in conditions that included snow, sleet and rain. The weekend started with the Old Squit 200km and the Norfolk Mardle 100km audax rides, starting and finishing at the John Innes Institute in Norwich.
Hugo Robinson lit up the depths of our winter by taking a splendid win in the national youth championship cyclo-cross in Birmingham. Robinson, only just turned 15 and from Ashfield-cum-Thorpe in north Suffolk, hit his best form at just the right moment.
The region's time trialists gathered at Carbrooke for the East District Cycling Association's prize presentation, where, in a crisply organised award ceremony choreographed by Mick Gambling, medals won in EDCA competitions were distributed.
Josh Hannan (Extreme Sports Therapy) contested the closest finish at the Thetford MTB races - with a broken bone in his foot. The 15-year-old Norwich rider had earlier gone over the handlebars when trying to keep out of the way of the overtaking senior race leaders and his foot went in his front wheel.
Cyclists, or at least bicyclists, were glad to see the back of the snow - but on Saturday it all turned to water and riders in the Norfolk Nips Audax ride found themselves up to their axles in it.
Chris Nudds of CC Breckland and Duncan Murphy, who is now racing for Diss & District CC, are prominent in the results of the Sporting Courses East Competition, based on time trials held on hilly or twisting country roads.
